Ek Balam was our favorite ruin.
The pueblo near the exit (turn right) has a woman weaving hammocks outside her house, and who had some very good prices on them (probably what she gets from whatever middleman who buys them to take to more touristed places). Lots of variety of colors. Very nice family. (There were also other folks there selling hammocks that did not look to be homemade or of such good quality.)
We also went to another cenote from there. We turned left at the exit (following a sign there)and drove quite a ways on a narrow road, got to a small village and were given directions. Parking is at a cattle corral and then you follow a path tot he cenote. It is very rustic, with a ladder made of branches down to a little island. A couple of local families were picnicking and swimming, and the caretaker was very interesting to talk to. One of our most fascinating experiences.

@SambaChula - We did notice hammocks and dream catchers hung outside a house and thought to ourselves they could be weaving them. We did not stop though, wish we had. We got a bad pic from a moving car..
Do you happen to know the name of the cenote.. We would love to check it out, may be next time.. Sounds like a wonderful experience.

How did you get from the ruins to the X’canche Cenote?
Thinking about doing some bike riding around that area - cenote aside how was the bike riding in the general area?

@cybor - Thank you, glad you liked it. We rented a bike at the counter where we purchased tickets to the cenote. We really enjoyed it.. with no other bike or human traffic on the trail. It was still hot but not as bad as in the open sun.
No bikes were allowed to the ruins and we did not ride in the area outside the site. We did not see anyone on bikes though, only car traffic. So I am not entirely sure.

Thanks. kperaka. I think we'll just have to bring our bikes and wing it. I love the idea that the Yucatan is flat as a pancake.
