Excursions in Puerto Morales

We are heading to Puerto Morales this summer and are not staying at an all-inclusive. We'd like some tips/advice about excursions that we can book directly (in advance, through email/web communication would be ideal)--mostly snorkeling-based. We've stayed in Akumal at an all-inclusive in the past where we had the assistance of a tour guide to help arrange our day trips but won't have that convenience this time. Thanks!

Do you mean Puerto Morelos? If so, just walk onto the pier or the beach, and lots of folks with boats will take you right out to the reef (visible from the beach)to snorkel; prices are negotiable, but most very similar.
There's also a tourist kiosk on the main square; it's a tiny town, you'll find everything very easily. (I would wait to arrange the snorkeling, to make sure the weather is perfect. If you drive down the coast to more protected Yakul lagoon (or cenotes, whatever), the weather won't matter as much.

Thank you!

We are also interested in snorkeling at Puerto Morelos. Is the snorkeling there good...lots of colorful fish and plant life? Can we just show up at the pier and get out on a snorkel trip? Thanks.

Hi, flagal2 -

I tried to book a snorkeling tour in Puerto Morelos ahead of time, but was unable to do so, so I just showed up at the pier and it was no problem! I was very impressed with the fish and corals and seaplants I saw, but its the only time I've snorkeled a reef, so I can't compare it to anything.

Enjoy!

I'm also thinking of staying around Puerto Morelos and wondered if there is any resort that has good snorkeling directly on their beach. We're thinking of the Paradisus.

Previous poster mentioned Yal Ku--a protected lagoon with beautiful sculpture garden. Even better snorkeling is free, at Akumal Beach, right off the main road (look for large Palapa building on right side after you go through the white arch on the road). There are sea turtles here and lots of colorful fish. Coral pretty good.
