Driving to Baja from San Diego

Friends of mine are flying into San Diego and had planned to drive to Baja until I informed them they can't take a US rental car across the border, something I learned on the Fodors US board . What are their options? They want a Mexican vacation but are using airline tickets that get them to San Diego. Can they take a bus over the border and rent a car in Mexico? Is that the best idea?

Would also appreciate any added info on nice beaches, hotels etc. They like non-touristy places. Thanks in advance for any info.

hi mclaurie,
I personally would fly SAN - LaPaz and rent a car there for Baja touring.

Thanks Mikemo. Any suggestions on best airline? Best areas to visit?

You can take a rental car into Mexico. There is an additional insurance charge-I think we paid about $15 per day 2 years ago. We flew into San Diego and drove down no problem. I can't remember the company probably avis, hertz or budget. You can also take a but to ensenada. I don't know details.

Thanks cshuman. Where did you go? Which towns? Wondering how far south you need to go before it gets less crowded and "nice."
