Driving to Arenal Volcano

I'm heading to Costa Rica on Dec. 3rd. Looking for directions fron San Jose (Presidente) to the Hotel Montana De Fuego nesr Arenal volcano. Any suggestions?

It's about 200km from San Jose to Montane de Fuego, which is between La Fortuna and Tabacon Resort. Are you renting a car? If so, the driving will be a bit slow, due to narrow winding roads, but they are in decent condition (for Costa Rica!).

Here are some messages from the Choose Costa Rica Bulletin Board, discussing this route:

http://discoverypress.com/wwwboard/messages/1285.html

ALF,

Thanks for the info...yes I'm renting a Jeep Cherokee. I trust it will handle the roads/pot holes.

Dan

I would suggest you go through San Ramon and La Tigra and not through San Carlos. I understand it is faster, has less traffic and is in better shape than that San Carlos route.
We took the San Ramon/La Tigra route last year in August and it took us 3 hours from San Jose. Montana de Fuego has signs posted along the road which helped in navigating.

Dan,

Go to the website for the Tabacon Resort and follow their directions; Montana is on the same road as Tabacon, (about 2 miles or so apart). The directions suggest you go thru San Ramon & La Tigra as the above poster also suggests.
