Driving there in Baja: safe or not?

Planning to spend 2 weeks in Baja next summer, do some diving there, and considering whether it's safe or not to drive by car from Phoenix to Cabo San Lucas? And is it worth driving 1,3K miles or better to take a flight?

I'd rather fly, but not because it's unsafe, rather it's an awful long & boring drive.

I agree with Suze. Plus it would be super hot. A trip like that would take a lot of research and better done in winter or spring. I would fly to Cabo and venture out from there.

The truckers on the rather narrow road (I have "bused it") like to play chicken with the tourist as a joke. Will not hit you but will come close.

PS Not boring Suze. In fact much of it is quite enjoyable.

I'm not a fan of the desert.

A Baja road trip is one of my bucket list items, so I think it sounds great. I don't know what the border is like at AZ, but for crossing from California, there don't seem to be any major issues.

Here is a site that I found, which seems informative:

I had a better site, but I can't find it now, darn it.

I'll actually be in Baja tomorrow, but I don't know if we'll get any further south than Ensenada. But whatever tidbits I might be able to offer, I'll post.

Personally, I love driving in Mexico. Sounds to me like having the opportunity to drive Baja might be a once in a lifetime thing. We didn't have the time to go further than Ensenada as I mentioned, but thoroughly enjoyed Valle de Guadalupe and the wine country. Montes de Xanic and Sol de Media Noche stood out. Could have spent 2 days there. Would have loved to see more. Maybe someday.
