Driving the Pan-American Highway - is it safe? how long will it take? any tips?

i'm trying to convince my boyfriend to take the drive from LA to Costa Rica on the Pan-American Highway. The one thing I'm really concerned about is safety. I can pass for a Latina (i have olive skin) but I can't speak it and my boyfriend is pale white so he at least will be an obvious tourist. Does anyone know how dangerous it is?

Also, I'm not sure how long is a reasonable amount of time to travel for.

Any other tips or contact from someone who has done the trip would be appreciated!!

The part I am familiar with is in southern mexico. I have traveled it repeatedly in buses. I would think in a car you would want to be able to speak Spanish for all the military checkpoints. There are reporst of robberies along the way. Daytime only travekl would be wise.
