Driving South Of Puerto Vallarta Along Coast & Mountains
Hi all. My husband and I heading down to Puerto Vallarta for two weeks in January. We wanted to get a car and drive south along the Bay of Bandaras and hit all the little surf towns. Yelpa – Pizota – up through the mountains to Chacala – Ixtlahuahuey – El Refugio de suchitlan - La Sauceda - then down to the beach at Chimo and then Corrales. Then south along the coast possibly all the way to Barra de Navidad. Then back on Hwy 200 to Puerto Vallarta. Anyone done this before? Is it possible to do in a car? Or do we need a 4-wheel drive? Is it safe? Any hotel or specific beach recommendations? We'd love to try to rent Stand-up Paddle Boards in towns along the way - anyone know specific towns that have them?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Almost impossible to drive to Yelapa, no road to Pizota either, for Yelapa you would need a serious 4 wheel drive. Chacala and the rest can be reached through El Tuito, but not all the roads are in good condition. It can be done though here's a map.

El Rincnocito Hotel is good at Mayto Beach see the bottom of this page http://vallartainfo.com/beaches.html
you can't reach Barra except via route 200
Paddle boards have just started here, try Bucerias, El Anclote Beach or Sayulita

You cannot drive to Yelapa, Pizota, etc. by car, you can only get to these beaches by boat including Chimo. You can drive from PV to Barra, Melaque, Manzanillo, Careyes etc very easily.
HWY 200 goes iland after Boca de Tomatlan and while you can drive to El Tuito and then take the road inland to Mayo/Tehuamixtle- trying to hit the other places would take you ages to get to them all.
Check the Google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=google...m&z=12&vpsrc=6

You have been given excellent advice. If you have the time drive to Meleque/Barra area stopping at the various lovely beaches on the way.
If you want to make a real trip of it spend a couple nights in Meleque/Barra & do a day trip to possibly the prettest town square in all of Mexico at Colima.
