Driving in Mexico - San Miguel de Allende to Cuernavaca
 

Does anyone have any experience driving the region in Mexico around San Miguel de Allende, and then driving to Cuernavaca? I'm wondering whether I should rent a car and do the driving myself, or hire drivers when I need them. It'd be my family of four on the road -- safety is my main concern. Thanks!

I live in San Miguel and drive several thousand miles each year in and around the area, though I haven't driven to Cuernavaca. The only safety issues you'd encounter are traffic related, especially as you try to navigate in and around the DF. Traffic in Cuernavaca is no picnic, either, especially if you find yourself going on the weekend, as you'd be competing with weekenders from Mexico City. Couple of other observations, signage on Mexican roads/highways is at times confusing, and some times non-existing, at least as compared to what you'd be used to in the US, if that's where you're from.
Renting a car in San Miguel is expensive, and you'd likely need to reserve in advance. There are agencies in Celaya that will deliver a car to San Miguel for much less, but you'd probably need to speak some Spanish to do that.
For probably 80% of the places you might want to visit around San Miguel, you can certainly do it by bus. Certainly in San Miguel proper you don't need (or want) a car.
That said, there are some places around San Miguel that are best visited if you have your own vehicle. Without trying to be nosy, if you'd give some specifics I might be able add some more input.
