Driving In Costa Rica
 

Hi everyone, planning a trip for next January/February To Costa Rica. We would start out in San Jose and then want to head out towards Manuel Antonio. We wondered if it would be wise for 2 single women to head out on their own in a rental car. And if yes, would there be areas we should avoid for safety reasons. Thank you for your input!

I think you would be fine as long as you're driving during the day. I'd avoid driving between cities at night just because things are hard to see and not well marked. The road is in good shape. It's a very popular tourist area. I would feel safe doing it. I'd recommend getting the GPS option. That really helped us on our last trip.

I echo volcanogirl's advice. It gets dark about 5:30 p.m. If driving between cities, always make a point to be at your destination by then.

I think it would be fine too. I'd do it without hesitation. Driving at night is not a good idea as noted - not because you are women - its just harder to see peds, aminals, potholes, etc.

I don't feel like it's safe to drive between cities at night unless you're really familiar with the area.It is about three and a half hours away by car from the international airport in San Jose. In city you will find not all roads are well- or clearly marked. Even those with signs don't give you advance notice.

Traffic and driving habits in San Jose are horrific so best to rely on public transit when in the city. Outside the city main roads are mountainous and not multi lane so can easily be blocked for prolonged time by an accident. The driving itself is not difficult but does require considerable patience and more time than you might expect. Buses between destinations is a good option. CR is IMHO is a safe and comfortable country to travel in for women or anyone else; drinkable water, English spoken fairly widely, courteous citizens, wonderful wildlife and nature.
