Driving from Cancun to Houston

I will be driving from Cancun to Houston at the end of June, 2014. Any suggestions on the safest route, safest places to stop for the night (not driving at night) and best place to cross the border.

I just researched this today myself. Not from Houston, but what border crossings are safest to drive, what route to take through MX to Yucatan, what routes to avoid (esp. coastal gulf of MX routes apparently).

This is the best info I found. The article was written a few yrs ago but there is a lot of updated info in the many responses.

Tend to agree with the info in the Yucatan living article. A couple of things I might add, are that 1) between Queretaro and Saltillo, the town of Matehuala is a good place to stop, and puts you about 10 1/2 hours to Houston. Hotel Las Palmas is a clean, secure, 60's style motor hotel with large rooms and a decent restaurant. 2), the Colombia Bridge border crossing just north of Nuevo Laredo is probably the easiest/quickest and allows you to avoid NL and Laredo altogether. And if your car has MX plates, you don't have to pay the toll as TX has no way to bill you.
