Driving From Belize to Tikal

Hello all - we'll have a rental car from Crystal, but am wondering if it is better to leave the car in San Ignacio (at our hotel) and take a more public form of transportation.

There will be 4 of us traveling - 3 women and one man.

You cannot cross borders

with rental car.

Public Xport or

share a shuttle/taxi

even better...

Actually, Crystal is one rental company that will allow its cars over the border. However, you will be completely uninsured while in Guatamala. You're much better off leaving the car and arranging other transportation or a tour.

I loved driving in Guatemala. The roads the potholes aahh. We had no problems driving to Tikal touring around Flores. The idea of having an accident was always in the back of your mind but we were lucky just flat tires in Belize. If you get the paper work from your rental car agency then it just takes about 45 minutes to clear customs ( on the day we did) first you have to pay to leave Belize then you pay a guy to wash your tires(no Belize bugs can go over the border??) Then you take your passport for immigration who will hold it until you go to another area to get your car through, Then when you have paid those 2 officials we got stopped by someone else in uniform and paid him for something or other. But again don't drive at night.
