Driving from Arenal to SJO (Sansa terminal) - how much time to build in for rental car return?

We are heading from Arenal to the Osa for the second leg of our CR trip. Our plan is to leave Arenal early and drive our rental car to SJO to catch a 10:30am Sansa flight to Puerto Jiminez.

I know the drive from Arenal to SJO is about 3-4 hours, but I'm not sure how much time we should build in for returning our rental car. Any thoughts? Also, we have not decided on rental car company yet, so if there is one that would be faster or more convenient to the Sansa terminal, we'd love to hear about it. Many thanks!

!/2 hr or less should be plenty unless you arrive and there is a line up of customers or you have auto issues to deal with, hopefully neither.

Tricolor and Toyota are both convenient and give good service.

haydencat, are you planning to be at the Sansa terminal about 9:45? Gee, you're going to have to leave Arenal very early! 6:00 should do it, though. Unless something unforseen occurs on the road (which can and does happen!), that allows 3 hours for the drive (usual time) and 45 for checking it the vehicle. Should be fine. . .

Thanks everyone. Yes, the plan is to leave at 6am or earlier that day so that we arrive at the Sansa terminal by 9:30-9:45. We figured we'd rather stay the night in Arenal and get up early, rather than overnighting in San Jose. We want to take the 10:30 flight so we arrive at Bosque del Cabo in the early afternoon.

We're debating taking a private transfer to/from Arenal instead of renting a car so that we wouldn't have to deal with returning the rental car under a time crunch. BUT we also thought it would be nice to make the drive up there and have a car while we're in Arenal. We like the freedom of having our own car. Also, we are staying at Lost Iguana which is somewhat isolated from La Fortuna, so a rental car would come in handy for trips to town as well as day trips.

I have read good things about Tricolor on this board, and I assume from Earthtraveler's comment that their office is convenient to the Sansa terminal. I think we'll rent with Tricolor, leave as early as possible for our flight, and hope for the best!

Have a wonderful journey!

Yes, staying at LI, it might be a good idea to leave about 5:45. When is your trip?

We will be traveling from Lost Iguana to SJO to catch our flight on April 25, 2007 (a Wednesday). Do you think traffic will be a factor?

Probably only if you get stuck behind an accident line up. You wont need to get in the worst of the rush hour traffic near San Jose.

Very hard to predict. As earthtraveler said, an accident will always tie up the traffic. Only way to be 100% sure is to leave the day before the scheduled flight. More than likely, there won't be a problem--9 times out of 10, or 19 times out of 20, who knows?

I think we'll just leave early, around 5:30-5:45, and hope for the best. Worse comes to worse, we miss our flight and have to re-book on a later one. Sansa and Nature Air both have a few later flights to Puerto Jiminez that afternoon, so hopefully there would be room on at least one if it came to that. Thanks everyone for the helpful advice!
