Tamarindo to Pan Am highway is in pretty good shape. Once we were on the Pan Am highway to San Jose the traffic was incredible. It took us nearly 5 hours to get from Playa Grande to San Jose. This is a narrow road by my standards and very busy with semi's and old trucks filled with pigs, cows, horses, sugar cane, or other produce. The traffic moves slowly as those trucks try to make it over the mountains. People take their lives in their hands as they try to pass. It was really interesting and I'm glad we did it, but next time I'm flying.

Hello, there are two possible ways, over Liberia or over the Tempisque bridge. The way over the bridge is more faster. Go from Tamarindo to Belen and then south to Santa Cruz, Nicoya , bridge then American Highway.

The road from Panamerican Hwy to Tilaran is generally in good shape with fairly new pavement. Once you turn off in Tilaran to go around the lake, the road is much worse, with lots of potholes and no pavement in sections. It is also fairly narrow and has a lot of curves. But if you drive in daylight hours and pay attention, you should have no problems.
