Dollar rent a car- Cancun
I just got a quote for a rental car from dollar in Cancun from Orbitz. It is about half the cost of other major companies. Is this Legit? Any bad experiences?
|
I've rented from Jesus at Dollar about 4 times and haven't had a problem - should be fine.
|
Are you sure insurances are included? The insurance is often more than the actual rental in Mexico. When I've rented there, I usually find Dollar to be about the same as it's competitors. I've found Ace/Executive, Alamo & America to be the cheapest overall.
|
True, zootsi - our rental is usually around $55-60/day with all insurance. Robert, your quote may be w/o insurance.
|
No thats the wierd thing Orbitz sells insurance which is listed seperately, and is about 85 dollars no matter what car company I choose.
How much does gas run in Mexico,I havn't been since 1983! RR |
The total cost of a midsize car for 8 days during christmas with Insurance is 250 dollars or 31.25/day RR
|
Wow!!
That's a great deal if it definately includes full insurance. It's about 1/2 price!! You'll probably get a Ford Focus. |
I wouldn't mind just having a VW bug is that the common economy car issued?

Robert,
The Orbitz quote is for basic CDW insurance. If you go to the Dollar site and look at local (*CUN) information on the rental it will offer the following info on additional insurances which you may choose to purchase. The CDW offers basic coverage but it's good to know all the specifics and many of the different companies use different names on their alternate insurances. It can be very confusing. Additional Information: Loss Damage Waiver (also known as a Collision Damage Waiver) is an optional charge at 17.00USD per day and carries a 10% responsibility for accident, and 20% for total loss or theft. Credit card insurance coverages are not accepted in Mexico. Supplemental Liability Insurance (Not LDW) is optional at a cost of 11.00USD per day. It is a protection that extends the coverage of legal liability up to MXN 950,000. If LDW is declined, customer must purchase SLI and will be responsible for full value of car. |
Yes, I am figuring on getting both insurances for about 200/week. but the car itself is just under 100 so total is around 300.
Any idea what an economy car is, I don't mind small,we have rented a ford KA and Fiat Punto before no problem. RR |
I think the economy car I've had before is the Atos. They are small for sure but have a covering over the back of the hatchback so people can't see inside at your stuff. Just be careful with the Orbitz. I've heard of some folks who've rented from their site before only to get to the counter and not be able to get the quote they have printed. Especially if it seems too good to be true. I've not rented from Dollar so pepper has a better take on them.

I paid $145/wk for a manual VW Pointer at National including 3rd party. My CC covered CDW.

Some credit cards will cover the CDW and you need to decline the CDW in order for it to take effect but carefully read the fine print regarding declining the CDW as some companies require you do it at your point of reservation i.e. the internet. If you decline the CDW and your credit card is the way you want to go for coverage then you need to know in the event you have an accident what to do. My cc company gave me a number to call in case of accident but the likelihood of my being able to call anyone from the roadside in MX is pretty slim. Generally you pay for the damages and then your cc reimburses your expenses when you return. Just be careful to keep all receipts so this can happen. Sometimes I've rented using my cc and sometimes I've also taken full coverage with 0 deductible. Also, when renting the car make sure you do a complete inspection of the vehicle including spare tire, license plates, no broken lights and look at the gas gauge since it's been my experience that you aren't given much gas. I usually have my digital and take pictures of the vehicle.
|
Oh, I meant to add - I've never had a problem renting from Executive, Hertz or Budget. Only one time did I have a problem with another company and fortunately I had 0 deductible so I was fully covered when the vehicle refused to backup.

I am a bit uncomfortable about using Credit card insurance anywhere except the USA. I believe mexico is a guilty until proven innocent country (Napoleonic law). I would just as soon cover with INS. RR

You're better off in the long run in case anything goes wrong.
