Does anyone out there have any experience traveling the west coast of Mexico?

We will be traveling from Mexacali Rt 2 to Rt 15 south to Hemosillo, Isle of Tiburon, Guaymas, Navojoa, Huatabampo, ending up in Los Mochis to take the train up through the Copper Canyon. Do we need to worry about security in the mountains coming down along the coast? We realize that it is not a real tourist area. What should we expect? Is it worth it or should we just fly or take the express route?

I would definitely stick to the toll roads and not venture off into the mountains. There are folks living in those mountains that don't welcome strangers. Some of them are engaged in activities that they would just as soon keep secret. This is mainly in the southern areas of your planned journey.

Get a copy of the Pacific Mexico Handbook by Bruce Whipperman. It covers the whole Pacific coast
