Document(s) Needed To Walk Across Border Into Mexico

Friends and I will be visiting San Diego and plan to take the trolley to the Mexico border and walk across into the country and visit Tijuana. I've gotten conflicting information about document(s) needed. Is just a picture I.D. enough or do I need my birth certificate also? Passport is not required, correct? Thanks so much in advance for any replies.

you may not need passport to cross into mexico but you may need it come back into the usa.

check with the mexican consulate they can verify.

i would take my passport if you have one.

yes, you will need a passport to re-enter the usa from mexico.

You probably won't need anything, if asked on either side you may need valid state issued I.D., e.g. driver's license and certified copy of a birth certificate.

Currently, a passport is not rquired for crossing the border by land. You will need a government issued picture ID and your birth certificate ( original or certified, raised seal copy).
