day trips from Mexico City

Hi there,

I will have 6 full days in Mexico City. Is it possible to do a day trip to Puebla? Would you recommend a day trip to Guanajuanto? Also, can you recommend a driver as well? Thanks for your time, Cathy

I would skip Guanajuato. Not because it's not worth a visit, but because it's like 5 hours from CDMX. Puebla day trip is much more doable. If you could make it work logistically, spending a night in Puebla is even better than a day trip.

I agree with Baldone. Guanajuato is way too far for a day trip. Puebla is great, and if you could spend a night there, even better. We took the bus, which was easy.

Okay, I figured that Guanajuato was a little on the far side. Thanks.

I agree also. The pyramids (Teotihuacan) and Puebla are the usual suspects, but you should see the suburbs if you aren't counting that. Very nice, such as where Frido Kahlo lived (and Trotsky, I really enjoyed visiting both their houses which are museums). That's in Coyoacan. I got there by the Turibus which has a route that is nice to get out of the city. There is a metro stop there, also, just a bit of a hike from it to Kahlo's house.

If you need more, I'd suggest Tlaxcala which is only about 2 hrs away by bus or Cuernavaca, which isn't as far to the south.

Yeah A day trip to my favorite city Guanajuato is just too ambitious.Sort of like going from LA to San Francisco for the day.
Teotihuacan is IMO the most important site to visit BUT do not do the organized tours taking the bus instead, They for the most part are real rip off wasting your time at tourist traps coming & going.

I took an organized tour and enjoyed it very much. It wasn't very expensive for the entire day so couldn't be much of a "rip off." The entire day was less than US$100, probalby more like $50. It included that church where they have the Virgin of Guadeloupe's cloak, also. They did stop at one spot on the way which I suppose was a tourist trap, some shop for souvenirs and some demonstration of some kind of drink, I don't recall as I wasn't interested (something alcoholic maybe), but it only took about a half hour so who cares, I found it useful as I could buy a sunhat which I had forgotten and my scalp was burning. Also people could go to the rest room.

Okay, well it looks like I will have to save Guanajuato for another time. I have read some other posts, albeit they are a couple of years old now, but someone suggested doing an organized daytrip that includes Puebla and Cholula. Has anyone done that? We land in Mexico City at 7:30 am and thought that we'd just go straight to Puebla and spend two nights there and then return to Mexico City for the duration (except when we see the pyramids). Can we also see Cholula, on our own, while we are in Puebla or would you recommend an organized daytrip from Mexico City? I do appreciate your thoughts on this. We land August 17 and leave August 23 in the late afternoon. Flying from Vancouver so time change is not an issue, just the overnight flight.

You may already know, but you can take a bus directly from MEX to Puebla. For Cholula, yes you can visit easily on your own. It is an easy taxi ride from Puebla centro. There are guides at the pyramid, if that's where you're going in Cholula. No doubt your hotel would store your luggage until check in. We always liked Hotel Colonial, located right in centro and next to some of the tourist andadores. Double-paned windows makes it quiet for that afternoon nap you'll no doubt need after the overnight flight.

PS, I forgot to directly answer your question, I would not do an organized day trip from CDMX. Partly because wife and I prefer to sight-see in cities on our own, with some exceptions. One challenge with the overnight flight is what do you do until you can check in. If you go directly to Puebla, at least the bus ride will eat up a couple hours.
