Day trips form BsAs
 

Looking for easy day trips for a family of 4 ( all adults) out of Buenos Aires in March. One will be on a holiday ( March 24), another might be on a weekend. Colonia in Uruguay was recommended. Will it be more crowded or more difficult to do on a holiday? Do we need to arrange in advance? Are there other easy spots to try?

There is plenty of information in this forum regarding day trips to Colonia, taking the one hour ferry
you can buy a ticket and go on your own or the company that owns the ferry BUQUEBUS sells group trips. You can take your own bicycle if you wish. Another easier day trip is a visit to the Tigre area, a river delta region , not far from Buenos Aires.

There are different options like having lunch in a Restaurant in Colonia, or an Argentine bar b q, asado, plus horse ride or bicycle ride....etc

I never tried those organized visits, I always went on my own. If you are four, I guess the best would be to hire a taxi in Colonia and do the visit on your own.

thanks to both of you. This is just what I wanted. We will do Colonia and maybe one or two other side trips. Sounds like I don't have to arrange them in advance, which is great news.

We spent a week in Colonia in Novemebr last year and loved it. Lots of nice restaurants and a very compact and pretty town to just wander around. It is also worth getting out to a few of the beaches just outside tow. We hired a golf buggy for one day which was great fun. It was VERY quiet during the week but a bit busier at the weekends but still not overly crowded (even when a cruise ship party was in town). You may however wish to book accomodation in advance for the weeknd if staying overnight.

The oldest winery in Uruguay, Cerros de San Juan can be visited it is some kilometers out of Colonia, also Carmelo with a very charming resort 4 Seasons is a good place to visit for some activity.

Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" has a pretty good show on Colonia and the surrounding area.

As it's on the Travel channel, look for the frequent reruns.

There are a bunch of good day trips- many of which people have recommended. my top few would be:
1.Tigre (staying on an island)
2.Estancia (pool, horses, bbq!)
3.Colonia Uruguay (if you have a few days you should see colonia then takea bus to Punta del Este and continue north to the remote beaches)

Honestly, I've had my best experiences in Buenos Aires city- theres no end of fascinating things to do.
Holidays are a little more crowded but if you plan in advance you will have no problem.

I am overwhelmed, as usual by the amount of help I get from Fodorites. I cannot imagine ever planning a trip without asking you for help. Thank you. We are so excited about going to Argentina in March. One of our daughter's will have gone to Tigre, but we may do it as a threesome while she's in classes.
