Currency Exchange in Costa Rica

We are flying into San Jose International Airport. We see there is a currency exchange in the airport, but are wondering if it is best to exchange our currency before hand at home or at the airport...some of the tours we are taking are cash only and some require U.S. currency. We didn't really want to carry a lot of cash, especially two different currencies. I'm assuming that most places in Manuel Antonio and Alejuela take credit cards, but we would need cash for local shops, farmer's markets, tours, etc. Any guidance on suggested amounts would be helfpul. We are staying 8 days. Thanks!

Actually we've never exchanged our money when we've visited; U.S. dollars have been accepted everywhere that we've gone. We usually get colones back in change and use that. A lot of places do take credit cards, but you need to check with your credit card company to see if they charge you a foreign transaction fee; a lot of them do. We got the Capital One card specifically because they don't charge the fee.

It's difficult to find colones outside of Costa Rica, and if you do, the exchange rate will be terrible. The Global Exchange currency counters at the airport also give poor rates, I think your best bet is to wait until you get to Costa Rica and use an ATM for colones.
