Cruise Ships in Roatan

A group of 10 of us are going to be in Roatan the first week of March. We're hoping to snorkel, do a canopy zip line, sample the local cuisine and get some much needed R&R on the beach. After reading some posts on another board and checking out the cruise ship schedule, I am a bit concerned, as there is only one cruise ship-free day the whole time we're there. Do the cruise shippers take over the island like I've seen them do in other parts of the Caribbean (most of the ships have a capacity for over 2,000 people)? Are they there all day or just for a few hours? We're not interested in crowds and waiting in line...that's why we chose Roatan, but now I'm wondering if we may have erred.

I stayed near the West End for over a week, middle of Feb last year, never noticed the cruisers. We were just outside of the West End and walked there 2 times a day for food and it was fine. The only time I thought it was busy was further down the beach to West Bay.

When I was there a few years ago, the cruisers seemed to congregate near one end of West Bay Beach. I recall the ships time in port was only about 4 hours so they would show up in the morning and be gone shortly after lunch.

Out of curiosity, where did you find the cruise ship schedules...we're going to be on Roatan in early mid March and I'd like to have some info on that as well. Of course, we're staying in the West End

Here's a link to one I've used; we visit in August and there are typically only 2 per month then.

I don't think you will have any problem with the cruise crowds.
I stayed in Roatan for a week last July and although we did not stay in West End, we did go there several times and had no problems with the crowds. The zip lining was great and I really enjoyed the island.
The ships dock in Coxen Hole, so unless you are there when they come in the only cruise people you run into will be on tours.
You'll have a great time.

Thanks everybody.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Yes, the link in one of the previous messages is the one I used. Let's hope most of the cruisers choose to stay on the boat the week we're there!
