credit card number lifted

Just wondering whether anyone else has had experience with their credit card number being lifted? I just got a fradulent charge on my credit card for a ticket purchased from madrid to san jose, costa rica. I only gave my credit card via faxes to hotels or online e-commerce reservations (i.e. nature air).

thanks

Sounds like someone at nature air got a free vacation.

could have been at the hotels too. I am not going to point fingers, but it had to be one of the three I am thinking.

Last year mine was skimmed when I paid for a transfer service from Burbank (California) airport. I was advised to report it to my hometown police and then give the credit card company (American Express) the police report number. It took a couple of phone calls 'til they reversed the charges.

I've started checking my account online more often.

Ours was lifted a few years back in Playa del Carmen in a store where we bought some trinkets. (One of only two places we used the cc.)

They used the number and exp date to fabricate a card and charge groceries. ($200.00+)

We now use traveler's checks only when in Mexico. Many people use their ATM's, but there's also a way to put an insert in the ATM which captures the card, so that is a problem too.

I read that Mexico is second only to Brazil in credit card fraud, and that it is a major problem in many of the Latin American countries.

Diana,

I have also read the same report, we do take a credit card but I normally only use it for car rental, have hotels prepaid for the most part, and use a combo of cash and TCs to pay the rest. No hassle to get the TCs cashed at the bank in Tulum.

Yes we had it done to our card in BELIZE. Luckily the thief only charged porno sites @ less than $10.00 each time. We were only there a week, but the thief had already charged for 2 sites before we got home. We did not find out if it was done at Caulker or San Pedro.

Yes, we also had problems in Belize. Someone charged around $1900. for hardware supplies. i think this was done in Placencia. Credit card company called us right away.

It happened to us too last December when we booked an apartment in Rome. In February a $1500 charge appeared on our Visa for a hotel that I never booked nor even heard of. I disputed the charge but it took 6 months for it to be resolved.
