COZUMEL IN APRIL
 

Considering a spring break trip for family in early April. 2 adults, 2 kids, 10 & 13. Love the beach, pool, snorkel, some sight seeing and good food. Want very much to avoid the college spring corwd/noise level. Am wondering if Cozumel would be a good option? Open to other suggestions if anyone has any. April 5-12. Flying from KY. Like to keep total budget (air, room, food, etc) under 7-8K. Thanks for your help.

We just returned from a short getaway to Cozumel. Although we enjoyed our trip and enjoyed the warm weather, snorkeling and the beach, I don't know if it is the best option for you. For us, four days was perfect. There wasn't enough sightseeing or activity for a full week. I think it would be very quiet for you and your kids. We really enjoyed the Riviera Maya area just south of Cancun a couple of years ago - spent a week there and had plenty to do with snorkeling, great beaches and the Mayan ruins. It was not a spring break crowd. We also loved St. John - the snorkeling and nature setting is incredible. Good luck and have a great trip!

Well...we spend a month in Cozumel every winter and I could stay longer, so it just shows no two people are alike.

Its hard to say if you will hit Spring Break -- it seems to stretch longer each year with different schools having different time frames. However, I don't think Cozumel is nearly as wild as Cancun during SB. We find it to be a very casual, family friendly island. We stay (own a time-share condo) at the Coral Princess Resort. It is located about 1 mile north of the main square. Quite easy to take a taxi or even walk to town. Nice beach area (not a walk-in beach, but sand terraces with lounge chairs) and pool - shallow and warm for kids. One thing that many families love there is that the snorkeling right in front of the resort is easy to access and filled with fish. You can actually sit on the beach and watch your kids snorkel in the ocean. Staff is very family friendly. The condo style rooms would offer you a kitchenette for some savings on meals -- breakfast & lunch. The resort does have a nice casual restaurnat. All one-bedroom units or more are ocean front with a nice terrace. Have a look at either Trip Advisor.com or at the Coral Princess web site for other's comments.

I believe that many of the tour companies such as Apple Tours package the Coral Princess with charter air for a reasonable price.

There are many things to do on Cozumel for children. We like to do simple things like go to the movies (in English with Spanish sub-titles) or take in the local circus. There's mini-golf, a dolphin program, a couple of nice museums and always something local going on such as a dance on the main square or a local soccer game. Just practicing Spanish with hotel staff or shopping in the grocery store is a lot of fun. You can drive around to the far side of the island for a day of walking on long beaches. Have a look at the "Things to do with kids" section of the following web site for more ideas. As for good food -- plenty on Cozumel and plenty that the kids will like if they get tired of local foods -- Pizza Hut, McDonalds, etc.

Thanks for your responses. I'll read up on it and hopefully make a decision soon. I guess there is no real way to predict where the college crowd will go or when!
