Cozumel Brewery

Does anyone know if there is/are brewries/microbrewery on Cozumel???

RobertSDF Feb 14th, 2005 05:40 AM

I am in Cozumel most every month and, so far, have never heard of a micro brewery.

Poppa Feb 14th, 2005 06:29 AM

I am an ex-microbrewer.

Yes, there are industrial breweries in hot climates because beer is appreciated all over the world. And some hardy souls have also started micro-breweries in such climes - but I wouldn't.

Anything that would threaten my cooling system would keep me awake at night. Intermittent electricity, storms, sheer tropical heat ... yikes!

Great post from Poppa! Hadn't thought of all those reasons. And Cozumel certainly has them all:Intermittent electricity, storms, sheer tropical heat !

I just heard from friends in Cozumel that there is a new tequilla processing facility on the island. While its not beer, it might qualify as a brewery -of sorts. Most agavi is grown and processed into tequilla on the mainland, but one adventuresome islander is trying it on Cozumel. You can visit the fields, tour the processing and sample different styles of tequilla. Again, its not beer, but "when in Rome"......

Sorry, no brewery of any kind on Cozumel. And the tequila factory is a new tourist stop where they show people how tequila is made. They don't actually make it but they DO sell it (of course). They have planted some agave plants but even if they mature (they might not, it is an experiment) it will be years before they can produce any tequila. I am a tour guide here in Cozumel and have taken a few groups out there. I would not plan my day around this place but if you are on your way to the other side of the island and have about 30 minutes to kill, you might stop and check it out.

When you are up Guadalajara way, stop by the town of "Tequila."

Many tours. Sauza's operation (and murals) very interetsing.

Thanks, CozAnnie, for the clarification. Guess I won't make the trip just for that.

Glad to hear the brewery story was false, Annie. In my opinion, another thing Cozumel doesn't need!
