Costa Rica with toddlers
We are planning a 9 day trip and will be spending 4 of the days at Manuel Antonio. I have been to CR a number of times (single and childless) and am now trying to determine the best way to spend the remaining 5 days with 2 toddlers. We could travel to Arenal or Monteverde, but having been there a number of times, I am seeking something different for this trip. Has anyone taken toddlers to the Caribbean side? We love wildlife, and the sloth sanctuary sounds interesting, as well as the butterfly and bird sanctuaries nearby. One of us is an avid bird-watcher. Alternatively, we are interested in Tortuguero and/or Osa, however, neither seems ideal for toddlers (but all seems very appealing for the adults). Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are a group of 7 (ages 2 - 65) and will be renting a van and driving ourselves.

Might consider Osa
lots of wildlife nature Drakes Bay www.jintetesdeosa.com www.corcovado.org simply wonderful... |
Southern Caribbean okay for toddlers. Tortuguero not so much, my opinion.
Our granddaughter (4) loves Manuel Antonio, Playa Flamingo. .of course the pools and beaches. She also REALLY enjoyed the Peace Lodge property two years in a row. . .but not sure when that will be up and running again. Have fun. . .very toddler friendly country. |
Thank you for your suggestions. I think Osa is going to be too complicated on this trip with 2 small children and only 9 days. Do you have any recommendations for a nice place to stay on the caribbean side for small children? We are interested in visiting Aviares and a butterfly farm. Also would love to hear about any interesting experiences/travels that readers have had with young children, other than Arenal and Manuel Antonio. Thanks.

Have you checked out Banana Azul at all? It seems to get consistently good reviews. Personally I wouldn't want to take toddlers to the Osa or Tortuguero, a little too untamed for little ones.

We have decided on Manuel Antonio and Arenal and appreciate your suggestions. I think Osa will be saved for a future trip when the kids are older.

I think those are great choices.

When we went to Manuel Antonio with our 3 year old grandaughter, we stayed at Si Como No. It was perfect for her because it had a very kid friendly pool with a waterslide and iguanas walking around. It was perfect for her dad because that pool had a nice swim up bar. :-)
