Costa Rica with a broken foot
 

Hello,

Thanks to all for your honeymoon planning help! We are supposed to leave for CR end of October, and it looks like I may have a broken foot. We were going to two places- Tree House in Punta Uva and Pacuare River Lodge.

We're right at the 30 day cancellation policy with Pacuare, so I'm waiting to hear about the Xrays and get advice, but will need to make a quick decision. I talked to the Lodge and if I am in a cast, I won't be able to make the rafting trip or the hike.

Are there other places/things to do in CR that don't need a right foot, or is this going to be such a bummer that we should scratch the trip?

I've been the bride that has always had a dream honeymoon rather than the dream wedding, so this has me officially bummed.

I'm so sorry. That really sucks.

Really, if you can't hike or go on the rafting trip or stuff like that, there's really not much point. Costa Rica isn't a "sit back and soak it in" kind of place.

You should have heard about the x-rays by now, right? They don't take that long to develop.

But, yeah, if you're not able to walk around or paddle around, I'd reschedule the trip for 2009 and look at a beach vacation in the Caribbean or Cancun or something like that instead.

How long would you be in a cast? When I broke my wrist it was only three weeks.

The main bummer about a cast is that you can't get it wet. I broke my ankle in March and in hopes to avoid surgery I had to be super careful and bear absolutely no weight on it for 8 weeks. If your break isn't that bad perhaps you could go to a removable boot before you trip.

Oh, Emily, I'm so sorry that happened. If you're still going to be in a cast when it's time for your trip, I would consider postponing it. Almost everything in CR involves a lot of hiking, water, activity. I'm afraid you wouldn't be able to enjoy to its fullest. Hopefully you'll get good news and it won't be an issue, but I think it would be worth postponing just so that you can have your dream honeymoon and live it up to what you've always imagined it could be. Emily, I am so sorry, I feel your pain. I broke my foot in July (5th metatarsal) and had to have surgery. I was never in a cast, but in a boot. I am still only able to walk with a hard sole shoe so that I don't flex my foot (it has been 8 weeks - 2 more to go).

I would not want to be in Costa Rica like this. Even though I have been able to walk around, everything is more of an effort. You really want to be able to enjoy a place like Costa Rica to the fullest.

This is such a bummer for you, but it is only temporary. Keep us posted!

Thanks, everyone. Went and saw the doctor this am- Xrays were negative- but its a lot of damage. I took a 10 foot fall and the brunt was on one foot. Decision was made for me- no Costa Rica right now.

Maybe it can be a first anniversary trip :)

Keep posting those trip reports- I'm on two weeks bedrest so I can at least live vicariously!!

Or, you might want to consider traveling in February. Nice winter get away.

Perversely, of course, 4-5 months is short notice for some areas in CR.

Sorry to hear you have to postpone your trip. I think you will be much better off going when you can be fully mobile, though.

Well, that stinks, but when you do go, you'll be able to do everything to the fullest. I think you're making a wise decision. Have a blast when you do make it there!
