costa rica vaccinations

my fiance and i are just back from costa rica and i URGE you to get vaccinated for everything your doctor, or the C.D.C., etc. recommends. my fiance has been very sick for a week and is in the hospital and the doctors (one from the C.D.C.) are still trying to figure out if it's hepatitis A, malaria, dengue fever or typhoid. she thinks it's probably typhoid (the one thing we didn't get vaccinated for) and they're running tests tomorrow.

on this forum there are a lot of people who discourage vaccinations because they or their friends didn't happen to get sick, but we came back and a week later were very sick. i had very bad stomach problems when we got back, but nothing compared to him. so please get vaccinated and of course don't drink the water!

Oh, no! I'm so sorry! Hopefully they'll figure out the protocol needed to get him back on his feet soon. Here's to a quick, full recovery for you both!

So sorry. Typhoid would be very unusual as it is extremely rare in CR but Dengue is a good possibility and there is no vaccine for that. Our friend got that on his first trip down there. He was very sick for about a week and then didn't feel well for a few weeks after that. My husband had to convince the Dr. to do the test for it because the Dr. here in the states had never seen it before.

You are the first people other than our friend that we have heard of that have gotten anything. We have been traveling down there for 14 years. It is possible that people have gotten sick but just never came on these boards to tell us. Bad news is just as important as good news and I urge everyone to let us all know so we can make informed decisions on things like this. My husband got sick for the first time just a few weeks ago when he was there. He was in a really out of the way place that caters to rural tourism and it was the water that got him.

Do let us know how it turned out.

I'm so sorry for you. But bad things do happen. A physician I know who lives in a terrific neighborhood in Dallas almost died last year from West Nile.

Thank you for the heads up. Where did you go?

I am really debating all these vaccines.

My problem is that I have a highly developed immune system and my MD is afraid that the vaccines will set it off.... and once it gets going I have HIVES for a year or more until it calms down.... Decisions, decisions....
