Costa Rica-Tamarindo

I have a trip planned for feb 11th - 21st. The second part of our trip will be at the Flamingo Beach Resort in Tamarindo. I'll be 19/20 weeks pregnant. I've read a few postings that say the ocean at these beaches are very rough. Can anyone confirm this? I was hoping to be able to swim in the ocean a little, and not have to stay at the pool for the entire time.

Thanks in advance!
Heather

Flamingo Beach Resort is in Flamingo, not Tamarindo. The sea is not quite as rough there. The thing about Costa Rican beaches is that they can be rough for swimming, so I don't really know how to answer your question.

Be glad it's not Tamarindo. There was a big article in the paper here Monday about the fecal contamination in the water off the beaches there. Pregnant or not, I wouldn't go in that water there right now.

Gross.

Heather, the waters at Playa Flamingo are, my opinion, a little rough. The waves are big. If you'll drive 5-10 minutes to the north to Playa Brasilito, then drive up the beach from Hotel Brasilito to Playa Conchal, you'll find wonderful waters for swimming. Beautiful, clear, nice gentle swells. This is a gorgeous, shell beach. Flamingo is fabulous for sunset watching and just beaching. They have a really nice pool--large, warm. One of our favorite places. Good choice! :)

Hope you didn't get the all-inclusive plan. If so, I'd attempt to get out of it. There are a lot of good restaurants nearby, and the hotel food is just so-so.

Have a great time!

Jeff, Which paper was the article in about the fecal contamination? I'm in the travel business & like to keep up on these things but I haven't seen anything on this issue for quite a while. Last I heard things were looking better...sad that's not so.

When I stayed at Flamingo Beach I was surprised that the waves weren't rough at all but I agree with Shillmac that Playa Conchal would be a better alternative.

Enjoy!

Here's the story http://insidecostarica.com/dailynews...a-10011801.htm

I agree with hip! Gross. Shame that building continues while the proper infrastructure has never been put into place.

I just read that article and it actually clearly says that Tamarindo and Jaco passed the tests fine. They are not on the list of contamianted beaches.

Jeff_Costa_Rica Jan 20th, 2010 05:31 PM

No, you're right. Things have gotten better in Tamarindo, and it did pass the test. Yet the area still has problems with raw sewage flowing into the ocean. I shouldn't have phrased my statement that way. I'm sorry.

Thanks for the link Tully. Sad to see the problem is still so widespread.
