Costa Rica receives 1 million US visitors for first time

Costa Rica welcomed its 1 millionth American visitor of the year for the first time yesterday. A family of five from Washington State was selected for the symbolic number and were welcomed with music and gifts at SJO airport. A big deal was made because it's seen as a sign tourism is rebounding after the doldrums of recent years.

Costa Rica receives 2.5 million visitors each year.

We are here now. Our fourth time -- This time with friends and family in a sweet house on the beach in Potrero. Southwest has just announced that they'll be flying nonstop from LAX to Liberia. That will be a game changer.

Where did you see the news about Southwest from LAX?

Our area (Potrero, near Flamingo and Brasilito) is practically deserted on the beach. Nice combo of locals, expats and tourists, with a few cool places for food. Went to Tamarindo today and there were bona fide traffic jams in and around town. We were there previously in 2003 and 2005...can't believe the difference. Will the arrival of Southwest completely spoil Guanacaste?

I don't think there will be any more impact than already is there. Southwest is a latecomer to Costa Rica and Liberia. Delta, American, United, Jet Blue, and Canada have been flying there for years. Alaska just arrived last month. Southwest already flies there from Baltimore and Houston since last year. The LAX flight will be one more in the mix.

That should be "Air Canada" above.

To be honest, it was Delta that really opened up Guanacaste when it began the first scheduled international flights to Liberia in the late '90s. Delta saw opportunity there. Other airlines followed suit in subsequent years. The rest is history.

We have been here several times before, but this was the first time we flew into Liberia (on Alaska). Really easy and convenient airport for anywhere in the north. The Delta flights are red eyes, as are all the LAX flights to San Jose. I feel as if CR has become the new Hawaii -- we keep running into people we know.
