My daughter and I travelled to Costa Rica last March and she returned there for the summer to travel throughout Central America. We stayed at Vist del Valle in Alejuela ( a small really neat Inn over looking a valley) and highly recommend it. We hired a driver who took us to some of the more local sights such as La Paz waterfall( great) and a trip zip-gliding through the jungle. I decided not to rent a car after much thought due to the fact that we were 2 women travelling alone. We were very happy that I made that decision. The roads are not well marked and there are pot holes and obstacles everywhere. One day there was a strike of some sort and we could not get throught the highway but our driver knew how to go some back roads. On longer trips we took buses which are cheap and equivalent to a Grey Hound type bus. We also went white water rafting which was quite an adventure. Some of the best white water in the world supposedly. The US Olympic team trains there we were told. The best rafting is out of Turrialba. A central valley town which will give you the feel of what Costa Rica is really like away from the tourist areas. It is a beautiful country with incredible people. My daughter was there for the summer and she said as long as you had an umbrella with you at all times you were fine. It never rained all day but was more like Hawaii... rain and then it would clear up. She said the beach at Corcovado was incredible. Have a great time
