Costa Rica itinerary help needed
Last Feb this forum really helped us with our first trip to CR. We did Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel antonio. Now I want to visit the Osa Penninsula in Dec with our grown sons. Does anyone have a good itinerary for there. I had looked into Aquilla de Osa with tours of Cano Island and Corcovado Nat Park but also want to maybe do a little fishing in Puerto Jimenez or Jaco or Quepos. Any thoughts on that. And then maybe getting back to San Jose and driving to the Sevegre which I know nothing about other than I think the sons could raft. Only have 9 days. Thanks for any help.

Good fishing can be done out of Drakes Bay area. David at Cabinas Las Caletas guides for $50pp in his boat. A couple went out fishing when we were there and we feasted on sushi and fish steaks the next evening. The couple had a blast.

Stayed at the La Paloma Lodge in Osa. Loved it. Great people and food. Great scuba/snorkel at Cano Island and tour of Corcovado was excellent. Bet they could arrange for fishing for you at Drake's Bay.

Thanks for writing. I posted twice by mistake. I had not heard of La Paloma and will look into that and the fishing at Las caletas. I did check out parrot bay and the fishng is so expensive. We may have to go up to Jaco or Quepos instead. Any other ideas, anyone?

Heyjude, we are planning your last years trip this Feb. How long did you stay in each area. We have 2 weeks in total, and were thinking about 5 days or so in MA? What do you think?

Robrick,
We stayed overnight in Alajuela, the droe to La Fortuna where we stayed 3 nights, then on to Monteverde where we stayed 3 nights, and finally to Manuel Antonia for only 2 nights which we wish had been at least another day. So you have plenty of time. We rented a car, but returned it in Quepos near MA and flew back to SJO |
Hi we stayed at La Paloma with our 3 teenagers. We snorkled at cano Island and did 2 hikes into the national park. You can also arrange to go fishing from their. I would highly recommend it. The accommodation, food and staff were fantastic.

Has anyone stayed at the Drake Bay Winderness Lodge? We couldn't get into La Paloma because thier packages were roundtrip San Jose and we are flying from Quepos and then out to San Jose. I think the tours are the same but I don't know about fishing.

We stayed at La Paloma (see trip report on this forum) and had a great time. Did you talk to them about your request to fly into another location? Several people that stayed there ended up flying to non-San Jose airports when they left. The people at La Paloma seemed very accomodating and I would think they could work out a package for you.

We have fished out of Puerto Jimenez, Drake Bay, and Quepos. I'll take Quepos any day. It will be more expensive than going out, I am assuming, in a little panga for $50pp but we have had way more luck out of Quepos.
Fred takes people out on fishing charters in Drake Bay. Just mention his name and everyone will know him. He is an expat from Ohio and has his hands into everything it seems in that area. He also has a small hotel called Ojala Hotel. The following has his cell # and a lot of info for that area. http://www.infocostarica.com/places/...corcovado.html When you say you are driving to the Savegre are you talking about the Savegre Lodge in San Gerardo de Dota? I don't believe there is any rafting out of there. Good trout fishing! Don't recall seeing it listed when I was there. If you go to Quepos for fishing your sons can do some white water rafting out of there on either the Savegre River or the Naranjo. A really fun place to stay for rafting is about 1 1/2 hr down the road from Quepos at Rafiki Lodge. You don't need to stay there to raft but it is fun. You horseback to the put in and raft back down to the lodge. South African style tents with bathrooms are great and the food wonderful. You can fly directly from Drake Bay/Palmar Sur to Quepos and by staying in that area will save a lot of travel time. |
The Rio Savegre can be rafted from Manuel Antonio, but not near San Gerardo de Dota. Your sons (and you?) would probably enjoy rafting the Pacuare as well. It might be easier since pick up is in San Jose. How old are they?
