Costa Rica Itinerary help - may 2004

Sort of last minute, I've decided to take advantage of the really amazing fares to Costa Rica from the East Coast (just over $300 RT from Washington DC on Orbitz). I'm planning on traveling w/ three other people from may 10th - 17th... the problem is I can't narrow down where we'd like to go and how much time we should spend in each place. We thought we'd rent a jeep and probably head to the pacific coast, stop in monteverde and then hang out in San Jose the last weekend we're there.

Can any one suggest any good beaches?? or improvements to the working itinerary? (we'd like to stay away from tourists and more toward the locals... though I don't want something so remote that we'd feel uncomfortable) all four of us speak spanish.

Thanks in advance

Dear Travelbug18,
I recommend you read an old post called "some thoughts about planning a trip to Costa Rica" which you may find helpful at this stage of your planning. In general I believe in the combination of a volcano+central valley+beach, really almost any combination will work, as long as you don't try to do too much in very little time, or to much time on the road.
Feel free to write me directly for any more information.
Pura Vida,

I topped it the other day but the easiest way to find it is to click on Neta's screen name and scroll down the posts.
