Costa Rica in summer (end July/early August) with kids
Hi - we are considering a trip to Costa Rica late July for two weeks. Would we be better off driving ourselves and booking accommodation or going on an escorted tour? We are used to driving abroad and tailoring our own holidays but haven't been to Central America before.

Any advice most welcome, thank you!

It's easy to book and reserve things on your own; that's what we always do. Most first timers like to go to the Arenal area and Manuel Antonio. With two weeks, you could see even more.

Thank you- is the driving ok? I'm a little worried that it might be rainy with flash floods and things. Should I worry about that?

That is the rainy season, although we've traveled during that time and haven't had problems. If you want to, you could hire a private driver through your hotels when you reserve them. There's also a popular shuttle called Interbus you could use. Plenty of people drive themselves without problems - just don't drive between cities at night or leave anything in your car unattended.

I would go for a local travel agency if I were you and just go for a fixed tour, as you do not have to plan everything yourself; you are with kids, so that would make it even more difficult.

A lot of travel agencies have many insight when it comes to the country; they know what would be the most suitable destination for you and your family.
I used last time and they gave me some insight on the differences between the provinces and seasons, as some places are really humid, especially in the rain seasons.

Make sure you also look up enough information about the country yourself, as it is always handy to be as prepared as possible. Take care and I hope you will enjoy your holiday!

I've planned trips for our kids. CR is pretty easy to get around and child friendly. I just picked a few places to see and found hotels there. You can book drivers ahead of time, or, what I mostly did, is I'd just go to the front desk and say," We need a driver to Arenal for Tuesday morning," and they'd call their people. It was really easy.

Just keep in mind that if you do drive, in CR there are no street addresses to plug into your GPS. So, you'll need to drop pins and grab the coordinates. But driving is pretty easy, but some roads are not great and rains/flooding affects tours too.
