Costa Rica in August
We were in Costa Rica last November and both Poas and Arenal were in dense clouds. Would we have any better chance to see them in August? I know it is the rainy season; I'm more concerned about the humidity. Is it much more humid in August than in was in November? (of course each August and November can be different). We're planning on Poas, Arenal, Los Suenos (by rental car) and a tour to Tortuguero. After reading the postings I'm crossing the Osa off my list for this trip. thank you.

The best time to see the Arenal vulcano is the dry season. However try in August. I hope you have luck . Go in the dawn hours, before the cloudes roll.

We were in Arenal for 2 nights last Aug and it was clouded over; however, we met people along the way who had seen the volcano right before us...so you never know! We just enjoyed the hanging bridges etc...and actually, Poas was perfect when we were there.

The key IS to rise early.
Sure, there are days when the clouds never lift, but there were entire series of days when the clouds arrived at 8 or 9 a.m. Before this, there were 2 very clear hours, including the magical moments provided by dawn sunlight. |
In reality you have to have a little luck with you.
When I was at Arenal, the top was cloudy, so my private guide said , "lets drive around Lake Arenal and I will show you a few places and then when wecome back , hopefully the clouds will be gone." We did drive around the lake and then came back and went into Tabacon Hot Springs and Arenal was clear as a bell!!! While sitting at the pool bar at Tabacon Hot Sprins with the guide , Arenal "blew its top" about a mile in the air..what a sight it was. So I was lucky! Many people go to Poas and I read where it was very clouded over unless you are there early in the morning. When my guide took me there it was about 9:30 AM( not exactly early) When I walked up the slope to Poas, it was perfectly clear....there was not a cloud in the sky.!!! imagine that ! I turned to the guide and said," you told me it could be quite clouded."!? He said ,"you are just lucky." So you see the point I am trying to make it that you have to have a little luck on your side.! Good Luck Percy |
