Costa Rica elects its first woman president
They make a big deal in Costa Rica about elections not being over until all the votes are counted. The opponents have conceded and the vote leader appears unstoppable, so I think the results are pretty certain.
Laura Chinchila, age 50, becomes Costa Rica's first woman president. She belongs to the National Liberation Party, slightly center-left. She has led in the polls all along, so it's no real surprise that she won. The only bit of suspense remaining was would she get enough votes to avoid having to go to a second round with the second-place vote-getter in April. Apparently she has. Chinchilla will take office in May. |
That's "Chinchilla," with a double L.

What is your feeling about it, Jeff? Good for Costa Rica--I hope she will be a great leader!
|
I think she'll be a good president. She comes out of the current government, which has done a lot of good things for Costa Rica in the past four years. She should provide a continuation of that progress. :)

We are also pleased! Amazing things happening within the last four years! My remote control is quite weary this a.m. after flipping between the election results and the Super Bowl. Laura won, the Saints won and we've had a bit of rain this a.m. I think I've just won the Costa Rican Trifecta!

That's exciting news - I read on CNN that they were predicting a win for her.
|
Very exciting!

Lisa, LOL. You hit it big yesterday. I'll bet that rain felt great this time of year! We enjoyed the Super Bowl results also! Hope you guys are doing well.
All well here. We've had snow on the ground for a LONG time and ready for it to "se fue". Come on, Spring! |
Super Bowl results - great. BUT, Laura Chinchilla - that sounds like an awesome WIN. Congratulations Costa Rica.
