Costa Rica driving at night

Our flight got changed and now we don't get into Liberia until 8:30 pm. We are supposed to be in Arenal that night. Is it safe enough to drive there that late at night? We have 4 wheel drive, confident driver and have been to Costa Rica before.

I wouldn't want to do it. Usually when people get in that late, they stay the first night near the airport. On our last drive up to Arenal, it was really foggy and rainy and very hard to see the road. I wouldn't have wanted to do it at night, but it's really up to you.

There is a new Hilton Garden Inn right across from the airport and would be a nice place to spend the night. This time of year it is light around 5ish so you could get an early start the next morning.

Never drive in CR at night unless you're in Arenal.

In a word, no. I wouldn't do it - too many people, animals, horses, crazy drivers. It's a good three hours to Arenal and even though it's a good road, it's best to stay in Liberia that night.

Don't do it, it does not make sense!
