Costa Rica drive time questions?

We will be in Costa Rica the last week in September. How long would the driving time be from Tambor to Ostional? Since that is the green season, could we expect road problems and longer drive times?

Also how long would it take to drive from Tambor to Monteverde? Thanks for your help!

Best bet is to just buy a map - we had the Berndtson laminated map and it worked very well.

There are not a lot of roads, so you only usually have one or two options to get between places.

I think Tambor to Monteverde would be about 5 or 6 hours...I didn't do that, but you have to take the ferry, I believe. Hopefully someone else can give you more specifics on that drive.

The Monteverde road is almost 40kms of dirt and rocks. We were just there and it was tough going in dry season. Guess it depends how much it is raining by September.

I agree. Definitely buy a map. Driving Tambor to Ostional likely involves fording a couple of streams in places where there is no bridge and that can be dangerous in the rainy season. The long-term forecast is that the 2006 reainy season will be wetter than normal. I've done that drive in the dry season and I thought it was pretty unpleasant. If it were me, I wouldn't do it in the rainy season.

Tambor to Monteverde will require the ferry and probably will take a good 6 hours, including wait time at the ferry landing. Happy Trails!

MAke sure you have insurance that will cover bumpy terrain with a 4 X 4. Ive heard horror stories where the oil pan got damaged via a back road and it was costly.
Beware of the mud and rushing waters in the little creeks.
