I just saw this - amazing pictures of what sounds like a great trip. We haven't been to the Caribbean side either, and we won't get there in Feb 2019. But next time, that will be the destination! Hopefully we can go around the turtles hatching season in Tortuguero.
Abel sounds like the perfect guide, and you are a brave soul to go out in the pouring rain and get so close to that viper. That's what zoom lenses are for

Ha, that viper was not scary at all. Completely passive and not interested in what was going on around it.

The 2 meter long Bothrops Asper, on the other hand, was the scariest thing I've ever seen.

I had to google "Bothrops Asper" and now I believe you. Snakes are scary, but beautiful creatures. From a distance.

This is the bothrops asper we encountered on the trails near Tortuga Lodge. I'm still afraid of that snake. NOTE: photo not mine.
