Corcovado
Planning a trip to Corcovado in July. Want to drive from San Jose. Any recommendations as to where to park rented SUV, where to stay, etc.? A tour company quoted $1,700 p/p for a week but I think we can do it much cheaper on our own. Have been to CR many times but never to Corcovado

I wouldn't drive. You end up paying a weeks rental for a vehicle that is just going to be parked. Plus, you have the obvious concerns about the security of a vehicle that sits unattended for several days. You are responsible for any damage.
I would fly from San Jose, or pay for a land transfer. When you need a car again, you can pick one up back in San Jose or Quepos. Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice. Warm Regards, Pat Hewitt Travel Professional |
Agree with Pat. I'd just fly. Is there a specific reason why you want to drive from San Jose and park car?

$1700 pp sounds steep, but suppose it depends on what the quote includes, and which resort. It would cost us about $2800 or so if we were staying 7 nights in one of the cabinas at Bosque del Cabo, Golfo Dulce side of the Osa. So $3400 isn't THAT far fetched, depending. . . It's a wad of $$ though, isn't it? Expensive area. You can keep the cost down considerably with your lodging selection. And less $$ doesn't necessarily mean less quality.
For sure, there's no need to park a rental for one week. Your cost would be easy to calculate, comparing hotel prices and adding on your air or land transfer expense. |
Thanks for the advice! Would like to drive to see the countryside/wildlife along the way from San Jose to Corcovado. I agree with the concern about safety/cost plus if we drive there we have to drive back. That's two days that we can't spend in Corcovado.
The quote includes staying at Aguila de Osa Inn and Esquinas Rain Forest Lodge. Any thoughts on cheaper places that are nice? Sharon |
