Colonia or Estancia-gauchos day trip?
 

We will be going to BA for the first time next month. We will be visiting for about a week. We would like to take one all day trip out of BA. We have narrowed our choices to Colonia or an all day trip to an an Estancia with gaucho shows lunch,snacks etc.

Could we get some advice as to which trip to take

It really depends on your interests. Colonia is an old city, with several interesting museums and a nice historic district....if you take the buquebus ferry, it is 2.5 hours each way...a little tedious......Most Estancia tours are about 30 minutes out of BA by bus.....Gauchos do some amazing things on horseback and the singing and dancing are fun....also, there is usually an opportunity to ride horses....

Just a short comment.
If you choose to go to colonia, just check that you go on a weekend. There is the moment were the village is alive. During the week not too much happens there.

Are there faster boats to Colonia and back? On their website it looks like it's possible to get there in an hour.

Yes, there are two types of boats...a high speed hydrofoil and a slower ferry...the former takes less than one hour to cross, the latter 2.5 to 3 hours. As you might expect, the fast boat is more expensive.
