Coastal Route from Santa Teresa to Nosara in May

Hi everyone - I would really appreciate your insight!

I have heard so many stories about this route (i.e. "impassable during rainy season") but nothing I've read gives details about the road during the month of May. I understand that, of course, we can never anticipate when the rainy season will arrive, but for those of you who live in or frequently visit this area, can you provide any insight into what it MIGHT be like in the middle of May? We're thinking of spending a few days in Santa Teresa, then driving up to Nosara for a few days, then finishing up in the Papagayo Gulf region. Alternative is skipping Santa Teresa area. Your thoughts?

I live in Nosara and would not take the coastal road in the middle of May. Rainy season has already started. In fact we had a large storm last night. We've already had a few storms (all late afternoon) in April. If you really want the coastal road, wait until you get there and ask the locals what the current conditions are. If it's not advisable at that time, just take the Paquera, Jicaral, Nicoya route.

Thank you! That's great info. If conditions are questionable, we'll take the Paquera-Jicaral-Nicoya route for sure. How many hours does it take that way? Just curious - an interactive map said just over 5 hours but that seems like it might be on the short side, no?

No, 5 hours tops. If you don't stop anywhere you could probably do it in 4, but you're going to want to stop as there are some beautiful vistas!

That's great to know Allylam - thanks again for the insight.

One more question: how long is the drive from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa? We have rented a Bego and will be starting the drive at about 3pm. I know that we will be arriving in the dark (not much choice)... is this OK, do you think? Should we upgrade our 4x4 option?

Believe you got all your answers on your other post...drive time apx. 5 hours......Your Bego will be fine, just don't drive too fast on the dirt roads....not a good idea to drive in the dark!
Have fun!
