Cinco de Mayo..a real holiday?

Four of us (2 couples) will at a resort on the Mayan Riviera first week in May. Wondering if Cinco de Mayo is celebrated at all or is it one of those holidays that is a bigger deal in the US-kind of like St Patrick' day?

Gnerally bigger in the U.S. There are some celebrations around Puebla. Its a day that has been embraced by the beer companies in the U.S. as a marketing tool more than anything else. Some think its Mexican Independance day, but it is the celebration of the victory over the French at Puebla. Independance day in Spetember is a bigger deal.

it is a bigger deal in the US than Mexico in my limited experience

Although -- I once woke up on May 5th to the roar of cannon on Mexico City's zocalo. They reenacted the battle -- complete with cavalry -- over the course of morning, and then president Zedillo addressed the crowd. Later that day the opposition parties held a huge rally.

Only time I was ever in Mexico on May 5th, so can't comment otherwise.

For a big deal go to San Jose, California. Not much in Mexico.

MonicaRichards Mar 10th, 2008 09:27 AM

Oh god, please don't come to San Jose, California for Cinco de Mayo! It's annoying enough already with the cruisers on Santa Clara street and their Mexican flags all weekend long!!

Suze maybe you can help I went to P.V. once in the beginning of May and went to one of our favorite restaurants and it was closed (National Holiday)Do you know which one it was I believe it was either the 1st 2nd or 3rd of May I was quite surprised that the 5th wasn't a big deal there

Butsy: May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day in many countries, perhaps in Mexico as well. Perhaps. that was the day you saw the celebrations.

Thanks I wasn't sure but it was a big one since the restaurants were closed. Thanks again for your response
