Travel time: Liberia to Arenal

Can someone tell me the approximate travel time between Liberia and Arenal? I assume we should drive the Pan-American highway as far as Canas, then turn off on Hwy 142?

Something around 3 hours. Could be up to 4 with a stop or two. We usually take a break at Toad Hall to enjoy a cappucino and a fabulous view! Sometimes the lake road is in better shape than other times. That affects your travel time a bit as well.

I've heard that there is a rescue shelter for big cats in Canas--where I think we would be driving through to La Fortuna. Would this be a worthwhile stop? If so, would there be a safe place to park our car considering that our luggage is inside? Also, if we stop for lunch in Liberia, what about the safety of the luggage? Should we leave someone in the car?

Keep the car in sight AT ALL TIMES if your stuff is in it. There's just not another option, save for someone staying in the car. No guarantees as Las Pumas either, probably, but it would be worth stopping and asking. I, too, have heard it is a worthwhile stop.

There are several fast food restaurants in Liberia at the intersection to get on the Interamerican highway. You should be able to keep an eye on your car.

Thanks so much for the advice. I was afraid of that--don't leave luggage unattended in the car at any time!
