Checked luggage/changing airlines

We fly into Lima on Spirit Air, and have to transfer to TACA. We have 4 hours in between flights. What hassles does one have to go through in between an airline change? We are considering just carrying on our luggage instead. thoughts?

Spirit Air probably cannot issue your boarding passes for the TACA flight. You'll go through passport control when you arrive in Lima, then baggage claim (if you decided to check your bag), and customs. Immediately upon exiting customs (go through the doors that take you back into the terminal and not the ones that go outside), you'll see the airline check-in counters. Find TACA, check in for your flight and get your boarding pass. Then head to security which is upstairs on the opposite side of the terminal. There's a food court before you go through security if you want to stop and get something to eat. Near security, you pay the domestic departure tax ($6-7, depending on the current exchange rate). It's pretty easy.

With four hours, you should have plenty of time to collect your luggage and make the transfer. If you can easily carry on, however, I think it's always easier. In your situation, either way would probably be fine.
