We have not travelled there since 9/11 so can't answer that. I have heard people say they used a birth certificate, but that has been awhile. Anyone else?

I've been to PV recently but have a passport so can't help with that.

If you use a notorized birth certificate you also need a photo ID (drivers license) along with it.

If you're concerned call your airlines for the current rules.

I found this statement on the internet for Mexico entry requirements:
"The Government of Mexico requires that all U.S. citizens present proof of citizenship and photo identification for entry into Mexico. A U.S. passport is recommended, but other U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable. U.S. citizens boarding flights to Mexico should be prepared to present one of these documents as proof of U.S. citizenship, along with photo identification. Driver's permits, voter registration cards, affidavits and similar documents are not sufficient to prove citizenship for readmission into the United States."

Just remember a "certified" copy of your birth certificate is one with the raised seal on it, not a copy.
I suggest getting passports if you travel at all, even just to Mexico. It is so much smoother & especially on re-entering the US.

jlh, just got back. Birth certificates and picture ID (driver's license) in our case were fine everywhere.Have fun

From the post above then, the regulations haven't changed for years. Simply that with the recent heightened airport security, a passport seems easier and more important than ever.
