Changing US dollars to CR money.

Where in the US would you exchange US dollars for CR money? We would like to arrive to CR with some of their bills.

Most airport money exchanges can change dollars into colonnes. I don't know where you are traveling from (I'm guessing Texas!) - but I know for sure that you can change dollars in the Houston International Airport. The exchange rate is good, but they usually also tack on a fee.

Most places, like taxis, small grocery and gift stores, restaurants and hotels, accept payment in US dollars and give you change in colones. We went to CR twice and ended up not exchanging any money, there was no need for it. Also if you use any ATM in CR, you will get your money in colones. ATMs work fine, especially if you have a Visa based ATM card.

I agree with Iza. If it's just a short vacation, 2 weeks or so, no need to exchange before you get there. I've been 7 times and have never exchanged any money. Take plenty of small bills, $1's for tipping, $5's for taxi. Anywhere you go, you'll get your change in colones. I would caution you with taking alot of $100's as some of the smaller places won't except them at all.

There is a place at the airport when you arrive to change money. Start with about $100 and go from there. ATMs are avail in the larger towns, Visa & "+" work best. Dont try any bills larger than $20

Re USA$100 bills. A few years ago there were real big problems caused by counterfeit $100 bills. As a result, a lot of places refused to accept them. I have heard there are STILL places that won't accept them although I suppose banks will and do but who wants to stand in long bank lines when you're on vacation.

Take no American coins.

Make sure all your American paper currency is in VERY GOOD CONDITION or they may be refused. Make sure they are not ripped, missing corners, taped, have writing or stamps on them.

In return, you will be given your change in Costa Rican colones (bills) in often deplorable condition. Some were so bad *I* refused to accept them in change because they are so finicky about ours.
