cenotes
 

Will be in Playa del Carmen in Feb 2010. Interested in the cenotes. We do plan on renting a car for a day to go to Akumal, so could make a stop on this day, on our own... okay with a tour as well...which cenote and recommendations for a tour company?

my sister and i went on a tour and it was alot of fun.
this was years ago in 1988 but i am sure not much has changed.

Azul is very popular as is Car Wash further south. Both just off 307. Gran Cenote is slightly further off 307 but simply stunning.

Hi travelpair: We are actually in PDC right now enjoying the winter break. Last year we stopped at Cenote Azul and I wrote the following in my trip report:

Cenote Azul: This cenote is right off Hwy 307, 15 minutes south of Playa, but not easy to find. It took us two tries to notice the little hand painted Cenote Azul sign, but it was well worth the effort. Nice example of a cenote and the kids were able to jump off a cliff into the water. 50 pesos per person entrance fee.

We usually don't use tour companies, but was considering calling alltournative.com. Also, we usually don't go the places like Xplor, but we did yesterday and it was an awesome experience.

We went to Tulum, the Gran Cenote and Azul Cenote. They have a few other options for tours that include cenotes.

Hidden Worlds has been recommended to us for cenote swimming. We're looking into that for our trip next year.

You might want to consider visiting the cenotes in Dzitnup, just outside of Valladolid - truly beautiful.

Sorry - I hit submit too quickly! I went on a Hidden Worlds tour that included snorkling in cenotes and found it very interesting.

We'll be in Tulum for a week in June before heading inland. We'll have a rental car, too, but might consider one of these tour outfits that I've read recommendations for:

If you have a car for the day, you can see Azul Cenote, Akumal, Tulum and Coba with a stop on the way back at Puerto Adventuras for dinner and to watch the dolphins. Just leave early. Do the cenote first, go to Coba, then back to Tulum, then Akumal and if time allows, on to Puerto Adventuras. Look at a map and you will see how easy it is to do this. Not easy to do if you are a late riser. Rent a car for 2 days and take time to see the beaches at Tulum and Casa Cenote and or Hidden worlds. We travel there everyother year and are up and down the corridor all week. Obey the speed limit or you will be stopped. We had no problems for years until the last 2 times we went and we got stopped two days in a row in October. We were five miles over the first day and zero the second.
