Cenote Swimming

I'm a young woman, Spanish-speaking, and I'll be traveling to Mexico by myself in just a few weeks. I'll be spending plenty of time near notable cenotes and I'm wondering how safe it is to swim in them, both from a water-borne illness standpoint and a belongings being stolen standpoint. Safe for a 22 y.o. woman to visit alone?

www.xel-ha.com would be fine if careful

some of the more remote ones would do a group

or a travel buddy at least...petty theft not uncommon

most cenotes pretty cold to swim in clear

but not a lot to see unless cave diving.

www.travel.state.gov Mexico for a heads up

www.insuremytrip.com always cheap and wise.

Have fun,

I would recommend going with a guide who will know the caves and where to avoid.

We used Edventures, and had a fantastic time.

We swam in lots of cenotes, mostly around Tulum and Valladolid; we have a small waterproof bag so we can keep our valuables with us (as opposed to leaving them on the dock) and had no problems, health-wise or theft-wise. Lots of photos and recommendations below - happy trails!
