Cell phone use in Mexico

We are planning a trip to Cabo in December. What is the best way to have inexpensive cell phone use. I know the rates from land phones are very high.

Are you planning on taking your own cell phone with you? If so, be sure to check that your phone allows roaming.

Cell phone long-distance rates can also be very high...

A not-so-expensive option are the Ladatel cards. They are used on public phones. You could also buy a prepaid long-distance card for better rates. They are usually easily available at tourist destinations.

I always take my cell phone to Mexico. My provider charges $.99 a minute roaming plus $.25 a minute, so I use it as little as possible. You might also want to consider using the Internet Cafes to send and receive e-mails instead of using the phone. This route is very inexpensive, i.e., $2 or a little more per hour.

Helena, Which provider are you with because I am with Orange and am told I can't use my cell phone anywhere in Mexico.

Miggs, I have AT&T Wireless. It's part of their regular service, but they also have an additional international plan feature that can be added that lowers the cost more.
