Cell Phone Internet While in Mexico?

Hi,

So, I'm doing a language course in Queretaro, Mexico for 4 weeks this summer. Usually, while I'm travelling, I've decided to forgo using the phone except in emergencies, etc... However, 4 weeks is a good bit longer than 2 weeks. What have most of you done? Keep the cell phone you use in Canada (I'm with Fido-- a subsidiary of Rogers) or the US and get a plan for that phone? I've heard of friends getting a temporary phone with internet while travelling in Europe; is this something you would recommend instead of keeping one's own phone while in Mexico?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Best wishes, Daniel Williams

I am finding that internet connections are becoming so plentiful in Mexico that I use Skype and when I need a phone I buy Skype credit and use my computer to call phones. Its going to cost you quite a bit otherwise unless you want to use a carrier in Mexico.

Dude-- Thank you for your advice. I've yet to go down the Skype route but maybe it's time.

Best wishes, Daniel

PS I remember your advising me when I went to Mexico (Monterrey) for the first time about 11 years ago that you liked Monterrey but that I should explore further south in the country. I went to Mexico City the following year but have not explored further since. Your words stayed with me all these years-- this summer if all goes well, I look forward to *finally* getting to see some more of central Mexico (with Queretaro and day trips from Queretaro).

If you have an unlocked phone you can get a SIM card for use in Mexico at one of the big service providers there. Save a lot that way.

Thanks Glover,

I've never done this but getting a SIM card sounds like the way to go. I'd read online something about not being able to get a SIM card if you don't have a Mexican address (http://toomanyadapters.com/buying-sim-card-mexico See Responses section), but hopefully this is just rumour.

Best wishes, Daniel
