Casa Questal (Valladolid) - anyone stayed there?

Has anyone stayed there? Planning to be there for a couple of nights later in November and am interested in advice about which type of room to suggest. Thanks in advance!

Answering my own question for future travelers! LOVELY place -- highly recommended. A short ways from the town square (maybe 8 blocks, a 10 minute walk) right next to the old convent. Small and quiet and peaceful, built around a beautiful garden courtyard. Very nice people running it. We were in room 5 which was perfect. Very private with a nice outdoor space facing the garden.

We opted for the breakfast, which was ~ $8 US and was really good. Coffee, fruit, cereal, yogurt, AND a main dish of omelet with ham or eggs or Mexican dish or pancakes etc.

The best restaurant in town is right on the other side of the convent 1/2 block away: Taberna de los Frailes. Also highly recommended.

THank you so much for coming back to report. I looked at their site and it looks lovely, esp. for $55 single. And I like that they give you a 10% disocunt for MAy-June and Sept-OCt. Going to file this one away, as we did not like the place we stayed last June (Hotel Colonial de Aurora), and don't want to pay the price for the El Meson del Marque.

Also thanks for restaurant rec.

Emd3, we really enjoyed our stay at El Mason, and our price included a terrific breakfast in their lovely courtyard.

We were happy with Hotel Zací, just around the corner from the bus station and where colectivos gather for Chichén Itzá and maybe 3-4 blocks from the zocalo. Great value, photos in the 2010 collection below. Happy trails!

I know Meson del Marques is really nice, as I had dinner in the courtyard and looked at some rooms. It is a price issue for us, I like to keep our hotels in MX at or under $45 USD but I want them clean and decent, w/god beds and some character. And if possible, a pool if they are in the Yucatan or Q. Roo.

For a weekend in January, (18th - 20th) for 2 people here are the rates on these hotel sites:
Meson del marques: 975 pesos per night, standard rm ($75 USD)
Hotel Aurora La Colonial: standard rm, $40 USD a night
Zaci: $524 pesos ($40)standard
Quetzal $70 USD, standard

I have searched La Aurora and Zaci for different times of the year (as I was in Valladoid last July and again in Oct.) and they hold steady at about $40 a night no matter time of yr.
I know Quetzal can be had for less at diff. times of the yr, bc I searched and came up w/a $55 rate, plus they also offer a 10% discount for May-June and Sept.-Oct. Meson del Marque goes down to about $65 a night in the summer.

We stayed at Hotel Aurora in October and liked it a lot. Very convenient, nice staff, pool, a.c., two comfortable double/full beds, ensuite, for U$38/499 pesos. We had a car so secure parking was important.

Hi VidaNaPraia. We stayed at Hotel La Aurora Colonial in July 2012, in a double standard room. I liked the pool and the room was pretty large, AC was acceptable. But the safe did not work in our room. I knew from our booking that there would be a safe, and I really needed a safe on that trip for a particular reason.

When I realized the safe did not work abt an hr after registering, I asked the older woman from the front desk to come to our rm. to look at it. She came in, tried the safe, and said,"yes, not working." and left. I followed her out to the front desk and in Spanish asked her if they could switch out the safe in our room w/one that was working (this was a free standing safe on a table in the aloset area), since we had already unpacked all of our items for a 3 night stay. SHe said no, that was too much trouble, and if we wanted, we could move to an upstairs room to get a working safe.

Well, that was easier said than done, because I had booked a 1st floor rm for a reason - I have bad knees and can not take my items up and down the stairs, and really can not navigate stairs easily, so I avoid them if I can. And I have a limp on my right side so I think that was pretty apparent to this lady also.

So we stayed in the 1st floor room and really regretted not having the safe. Many people don't care about a safe, but the thing that was more concerning was that she didn't care about recitfying the problem. She clearly could have given us another room on the main floor, it was July and there were rooms available on the 1st floor, but she decided to make it difficult for us by telling us we had to move upstairs.

This lady was cranky during our entire stay, every time we encountered her at the front desk we felt like we were bothering her. It was enough to make us regret staying there and making us decide we won't stay there again.

They did have secure parking right next to the hotel, we used that also. And we liked the location right next to Candeleria and 2 blocks from the zocalo.
